How to make sure your propane heating system is safe

système de chauffage au propane

Propane heaters have many advantages: high efficiency, fast and constant heating, reduced environmental footprint, and so on. However, you should always use your propane heating system wisely and carefully. Misuse, improper storage, or unsafe handling can lead to injury, poisoning or property damage.

Here are some rules to follow to ensure that you use your propane appliances safely.

Propane gas heating: basic rules

Always be careful when using your propane heating system. It is important to know the safety instructions for its use and follow them carefully. Your safety and the safety of your loved ones depend on it.

Basic safety precautions for using propane suggest that you:

  • Store propane tanks outdoors.
  • Place propane tanks on a solid base to prevent spillage.
  • Read the manufacturer's instruction manual in its entirety and follow the guidelines.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation of the appliance's area and effective venting of combustion products.
  • Check that the flame generated by the propane is pure blue. If it is yellow or too bright, a burner may be improperly adjusted or cleaned. Have your appliance checked by a qualified professional.
  • Always keep the air intake and exhaust vents completely clear (directed towards the outside). The appliance must be well ventilated.
  • Always use an appliance only for its intended purpose.
  • Contact a qualified professional for any repairs or modifications.

Your appliance has a bad smell: what can you do?

Do you notice an unusual odour coming from your propane system? If it smells like rotten eggs or boiled cabbage, it may be a sign of a gas leak. The first thing to do is to check the propane level in the tank.

Is the tank empty? Turn the valve clockwise and call your propane supplier for delivery. If the tank is still full, there is probably a propane leak. Close the valve on the tank by turning it clockwise and contact your supplier to have a technician repair the leak.

Until you get help, it is wise to follow these few guidelines for your safety. Avoid:

  • Smoking near the unit
  • Use light sources such as flashlights, matches, candles, etc.
  • Operate an electrical switch
  • Use a cell phone nearby.
