Are you moving into a new home? Are you building the home of your dreams? Are you renovating your kitchen? Is your current stove showing signs of wear and tear?

Whether you’re building a new kitchen or renewing your appliances, you need to choose the right ones that suit your needs. After several searches, are you still hesitating between a propane gas stove and an electric one? Both types of stoves have similarities such as being free-standing or built-in, available in many models at similar cost. However, both propane and electricity as a source of energy for stoves have their advantages and disadvantages.

Below, you will find the pros and cons of each of these types of stoves to better guide you in your choice.

Propane gas stove

The advantages

  • Even, fast, and stable food cooking.
  • Works in the event of a power failure.
  • Rapid change in cooking intensity. Cooling is quick when the heat is turned down, as there is no flat surface to hold it.
  • Precise temperature and flame level control.
  • A wide range of cooking options.
  • The burners are protected from spills and debris by a ceramic cap.
  • Has removable grates for easy cleaning.
  • The gas introduces a certain humidity into the oven (much appreciated by bakers!).
  • The oven heats up quickly (about nine minutes to reach 300°F).

The disadvantages

  • The low heat may be too strong if you don’t pay attention.
  • Oven does not broil food evenly (small burner).
  • Requires a gas connection for installation and possibly a conversion kit.

Electric stove

The pros

  • Easy to install, just plug the stove into an electrical outlet.
  • Easy to clean with a cloth or sponge thanks to a smooth or glass cooking surface.
  • You can easily program the exact temperature you need.
  • The heat is distributed evenly over the cooking surface.
  • The metal coils on some models heat up quickly, allowing you to speed up various functions like boiling and simmering.
  • The heat is distributed evenly and consistently throughout the oven, especially if amplified by a convection fan.
  • The oven is ideal for roasting and grilling thanks to its dry and even heat.

The cons

  • It takes a considerable time to reach the desired cooking temperature.
  • The glass surface of some electric stoves is not as strong as the rounds of a propane stove.
  • The cooking surface is easily stained.
  • The oven heats up slowly.
  • More expensive to use.
